Hydraulics of River Flow Under Arch Bridges

چکیده

IN T R O D U C T IO N Bridges are an integral part of any highway system. The design of a particular bridge depends on many variables. A major considera tion, often necessary, is the length of the bridge. In certain circum stances and locations the length may be dictated by factors other than cost. But, where necessary the designer must decide, “How far can the bridge approaches extend onto the flood plain?”. The shorter and therefore less expensive the bridge, the less waterway area generally provided. Waterway area is an important problem. Bridge approaches extending far onto the flood plain decrease waterway area and produce, during high water, a large constriction causing excessive backwater and possible damage to the structure as well as unnecessary flooding of upstream areas. In some cases the state may be held liable for damage to property caused by bridge backwater. In the past, studies pertaining to backwater caused by constrictions have considered shapes of opening such as that provided by a straight deck bridge. The Bureau of Public Roads has prepared, in coopera tion with the Colorado State University, a report, entitled “Computa tion of Backwater Caused by Bridges.”1 This report in particular considered openings such as are provided by a straight deck bridge. Fig. 1 is a definition sketch for a normal crossing of the type used in the Colorado experiments. The typical water surface profile is shown as a solid line in view A. The maximum backwater supereleva tion is designated as hi* and the depression of the water surface below

Investigation of the Impact of Bridge Structures on the River Route on the Hydraulic Behavior of the Flow (Case study: Velian River)

Introduction: As the main source of water and life for humans and other creatures, rivers may sometimes bring about destruction and irreparable damage. Therefore, it is necessary to study the hydraulic properties of the flow and the riverbed’s area to set a safe zone for human activities around it. On the other hand, constructions built along the river’s route such as bridges, weirs, superstruc...

Constriction Scour In Pressurized Flow Condition (RESEARCH NOTE)

When depth of flow past a river bridge exceeds opening under the bridge, the flow under the bridge becomes pressurized. The water is directed downward and under the bridge deck, causing increase in velocity and shear stress on the bed thereby increasing bed scour. This is termed as Pressure Flow Scour. The present study investigates the phenomenon of pressure flow scour resulting from a submerg...

Hydraulic aspects of environmental flood management in boreal conditions

In environmental flood management, an essential task is to improve channel conveyance using environmentally preferable methods, which aim to preserve natural morphological and hydraulic characteristics of a river. This requires a reliable channel design method that accounts for complex hydraulics, i.e. two-stage channel or considerable bank vegetation. Hydraulic field measurements were carried ...

Evaluation of Univariate, Multivariate and Combined Time Series Model to Prediction and Estimation the Mean Annual Sediment (Case Study: Sistan River)

Erosion, sediment transport and sediment estimate phenomenon with their damage in rivers is a one of the most importance point in river engineering. Correctly modeling and prediction of this parameter with involving the river flow discharge can be most useful in life of hydraulic structures and drainage networks. In fact, using the multivariate models and involving the effective other parameter...
